POETRY, RANDOM THOUGHTS AND STUFF LIKE THAT....
The title was taken from a quote from the elderly Dr. Archibald Graham, the former “Moonlight” Graham, from Field of Dreams, talking about how he felt only playing one game in the majors and never getting to bat:
“We just don’t recognize life’s most significant moments while they’re happening. Back then I thought, ‘Well, there’ll be other days.’ I didn’t realize that that was the only day.”
The game was late (in the 6th inning in a 7 inning game, the second game of a doubleheader). I saw the twilight setting in, the home-team Grasshoppers were losing 7-2, and I had a strong poignant feeling of sadness and loss, of time having passed by. Seeing my daughter rapidly growing out of childhood undoubtedly has something to do with that. I thought of all the summer nights I was doing paperwork instead of taking my daughters to a game…
I sat with the feeling and Doc Graham’s words came to me.
