POETRY, RANDOM THOUGHTS AND STUFF LIKE THAT....
So lighthearted + retro ! (Did not expect that :)) Great arrangement.
Thank you! I was very surprised at what I came up with here. The sound files I manipulated to create this are actually me playing acoustic guitar- the guitar riff to “Sonnet 18,” actually. That in itself wasn’t planned either- I picked an obscure wav file pretty much at random, and that’s what it was.
I had been aware that some of these soundscapes had been so dark and ominous- simply a function of the sounds I found using granular synthesis. This one, I was amazed at how celeste-like the manipulated guitar sounded. I loved the sound (and my daughters did too) so I built around it. I still got the usual assortment of machine-like grinding sounds, and thought of using them as a bass ostinato, but I decided I didn’t want to take away from the lightness of the piece.
Listening to the final piece I was reminded of John Cage’s “Music for Carillon.” Of course, he used real carillons. This sounded to me a bit like what Salvador Dali would do if he could paint the sound of carillons ringing.
I’m really glad you enjoyed this. These pieces aren’t crowd-pleasers and really aren’t meant to be.
