Sarabande for Moore

Sarabande for Moore, composed and performed by Mark Snyder.

Dedicated to those who lost their lives in the Moore, Oklahoma tornado on 5/20/13, to their families, and to survivors of the storm.

Although the piece has a strong John Cage feel to it, it is most assuredly not random, though the final result was one I did not expect- so in that sense it might be considered aleatoric.

Of Darkness (soundscape)

of Darkness,
a frame narrative,
an opera, accidentally
transported to the edge
of powerful condemnation
once experienced,
a masterpiece of grand strategy.

face to face equivalents
of lava cores and frozen runes,
oppressive mysterious framework
on the rain-slick precipice
of apocalyptic elegant whirlwinds,
fictional universes created
for perpetual Darkness.

the cops are hanging around a lemonade stand

how much does it cost?

these were major bombs with a potential for a lot of damage

the good guys have to prevail every day

they haven’t won the battle but they were successful, sadly

did you see the still photo of the man on the roof on Boylston Street?

the FBI is looking for help from the public

another road, and maybe I suddenly see you

did I tell you I need you?

you can’t lock it down

bundling your auto insurance can save you tons

they recovered black nylon, a circuit board, ball bearings, and nails

dump your old duster, who’s that lady?

how can you say you’re in love with her?

so much for me having grandchildren.

ah, ah, ah, ah, stayin’ alive

now, a special report on the tribal casino

Massachussetts can’t afford to lose thousands

it just doesn’t make sense

since 9/11 we’re on another pattern of crime

I was at the Sox game the day before

this is continuing coverage, we will get to the bottom of this

can government really keep you safe?

we were shocked, but were you surprised?

this was an atrocity, a murderous act

I had to see something beautiful

it’s the last dance, last dance tonight

We’ll be back after this.

Vital

An aleatoric soundscape created using granular synthesis.  Inspired by Gyorgy Ligeti’s use of micropolyphony.

Dress rehearsal went well.  We’ve adjusted to the room.  It’s a difficult hall to play in.  It’s very strange- I have never heard a church whose acoustics are so dead- there is no natural reverberation at all.  It sucks all unamplified sound out of the air, which makes playing orchestral instruments difficult, to say the least.  Concert is tomorrow night and Sunday afternoon.

Moonlight

An ambient aleatoric intuitive composition soundscape created by me.

I needed to cut loose after a terrible dress rehearsal tonight with the orchestra.  I was like a pitcher who can’t find the plate and gave up a 5-0 lead in the first inning.  I expected Reinette, the principal bassist, to come out to the mound and send me to the showers- but she’s too kind for that.

It is so frustrating having expectations so much higher than your actual ability on a difficult instrument.  With the double bass, I have to struggle with every bit of minutiae, since I’m a beginner and because it is so difficult to play, especially being self-taught.  The bass guitar comes naturally- I can ask “what can I do to use this creatively?”  Nowhere near that on the double bass yet, and it’s frustrating.

By the way, if you’re in the neighborhood, our concerts are at the Grace Chapel Church on Highway 1 in Tramway (Sanford), NC on Saturday at 8 pm and Sunday at 3 pm.  Admission is free.  C’mon by if you’re not doing anything.

Kirchenglocken

A short string quartet bagatelle I composed with elements of musique concrete for the Introduction to Sound Design course from Coursera.

My kids think it’s creepy.  I don’t know about that, but the locrian ostinato certainly builds tension.

facing the wrong way,
pleased to announce
a revolution, revocation
pursuant to detailed information
in a different position,
the same resistance
cannot find exile
in the parking lot of Wal-Mart,
drifting, beached, moored, resting at anchor.

I still will move
in periods of restricted visibility,
the repetitive, meditative,
motorized criteria
expire in their rapture,
a peace loving sort.
